Alfonso and Livia Iaccarino grew up in a family of hoteliers who established the Hotel Iaccarino in 1890. They got married at a young age and have shared the common passion for wine and gastronomy since their childhood. In 1973 they opened their own restaurant, managing both the family hotel and their new activity until 1983, when they decided to fully dedicate themselves to their restaurant. Both Alfonso and Livia studied three thousand years of culinary history and travel a lot to experience different cultures and cuisines. The restaurant Don Alfonso 1890, located in Sant’Agata sui due Golfi on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, carefully researches every dish and prepares it with the best possible ingredients, often directly produced in their own farm.
Chef Alfonso Iaccarino and his son Chef Ernesto brought this concept to Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto, which just recently reopened in a new location in the city, atop the iconic Westin Harbour Castle, on the edge of Lake Ontario. Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto has recently been named the #1 Best Italian Restaurant in the World, outside of Italy, and awarded Meal of the Year by 50 Top Italy, a Made in Italy guide that awards the best Italian restaurants outside of Italy.
We sat down with Chef Alfonso Iaccarino to chat with him about True Italian Taste and authentic Italian cuisine. During the interview he talked about what inspired him and his cuisine throughout his extensive culinary career. To conclude the visit on a tasty note Chef Daniele Corona walked us through the preparation of “Il Vesuvio di Rigatoni”, one of their most iconic dishes, whose shape reminds us of the active Vesuvius volcano located in the Bay of Naples.
Buon appetito!
